Raag Bhairav

Raag Bhairav -- like the majestic "vata vriksha", a reminder of one's own insignificance in mother nature’s grand design.

Many familiar and dearly loved pieces are included in this selection --- Mallikarjun
Mansur's rendition of Bhairav and of "pratham allah" in Shivmat bhairav, both are charged guilty of inducing trancelike states, quite dangerous while driving. His exquisite "piya milan" is sadly absent but there is enough Kumar Gandharva and a magnificent Gangubai Hangal to satisfy the most finicky palate. And the Bundu Khan piece, there are not enough words to express thanks.

One thing I have always wondered about with regard to Bhairav and the lores associated with its namesake. The great jogi (G.J.) was also a great bhogi (G.B.) So if he did his yoginess thingee in Bhairav, what raag did he frolic in?

Also, I am reminded of the following beautiful folk song (prelude to mata Jashoda's apprehensions) while listening to Ramashreya Jha's composition on G.J. going to Brindaban to see baby Krishna --- our gopi fires up the young mother's apprehension by singing --- Dekho ri ek bala jogi dwaare tere aaya hai re. Shades of Jogia in there although am not completely sure.
